Professional Massage Therapy Diploma
750 clock hours
Cortiva Institute's Professional Massage Therapy Program is a comprehensive course of instruction in massage therapy that bridges intellectual discipline with technical expertise. Grounded in the value of client centered care, courses in massage theory and practice, communication and ethics in therapeutic relationships, as well as real life clinical experience are supported and complimented by studies in the structure, function and disease of the human body. Engaged and competent faculty supported by relevant text books and classroom technology blend scientific foundations and hands-on instruction to create an experiential learning environment that builds clinical reasoning skills. Added instruction in the elements of designing a career path ensures that the graduating student will be a competent massage therapist, prepared to take the National Certification Exam.
The Professional Massage Therapy program is comprised of 750 clock hours and the program can be completed in 9 months (3 quarters) or 12 months (4 quarters).
Graduates of the Cortiva Institute massage programs should be prepared to:
- Demonstrate the skills, knowledge and attitude for a successful career in massage therapy.
- Apply their theoretical knowledge and practical skill to design and implement competent therapeutic and wellness massage treatment plans for a wide variety of clients.

Programs - Tucson
At Cortiva, our curriculum is designed for serious students who are willing to challenge themselves in the pursuit of a massage career that is both personally and professionally rewarding. We offer two diploma programs: the 750-hour Professional Massage Therapy Program, and the 1000-hour Extended Professional Massage Therapy Program. Our programs are well-balanced, integrating theory, technique, anatomy and physiology, practical experience, and personal and professional development.
Classes begin five times per year with day and evening/weekend schedules available. The 750-hour program is offered as a 7 ½-month full-time program or as a 12-month part-time program. Towards the end of the program completion students are given the option to continue their training with one additional 10-week term of advanced studies, and complete the 1000-hour Extended Professional Massage Therapy Program. Completion of the Professional Massage Therapy Program is a prerequisite for enrollment in the Extended Professional Massage Therapy Program. The length of the Extended Program comprises the length of the Professional Massage Therapy Program plus one full-time 10-week term.
The Tucson campus has provided massage therapy training as its educational focus continuously since 1982. Our programs are constantly updated to employ new modalities, techniques of training and learning materials.
Our programs are comprehensive and grounded in the value of client-centered care. You will learn massage theory and practice; business; communication and ethics in therapeutic relationships; and gain valuable hands-on experience. Our faculty members are engaged and passionate in your studies – and they are also practitioners so they bring relevant and current expertise and knowledge to the classrooms. And perhaps most exciting of all, you will have the opportunity to bring together the skills you learn in your science, business and hands-on courses, and apply them in the Massage Therapy Center, an instructor-led massage therapy clinic.
Graduating students will be competent massage therapists, and prepared to take the National Certification Exam.

We are excited to be able to offer our program because it presents so many opportunities to those who want to enter the profession and feel confident about their education. Our curriculum is well-rounded and balanced providing students with opportunities to learn the art and science of massage, client-centered approaches to massage care as well as self-care for therapists, and didactic, lecture based courses along with experiential, hands-on classes. Students who successfully complete this program become certified in Swedish Massage, Myofascial Release, and Neuromuscular Therapy. Graduates find that they are comfortable in job settings that emphasize wellness and stress-reduction, as well as settings which focus on sports or medical rehabilitation of soft tissue injuries or dysfunctions.
Both day and evening classes are available.

Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology
A solid foundation in the sciences is essential to safe and effective practice with clients. Coursework in musculoskeletal Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology provides a solid foundation in understanding the structure, function and health of the human body. You'll learn core principles for safe and effective decision making for clients with medical conditions.
Massage Therapy Theory and Technique
Through hands-on work, you'll learn a repertoire of technique movements and various elements including rhythms, speeds, pressures, transition and treatment construction. You'll learn the skills necessary to create a massage therapy treatment for a specific person including tension assessment, treatment planning, element variation and integration. As you progress into advanced technique, you will also learn to include your own style and intuition. Incorporated throughout is an emphasis on practicing effective and safe movement habits.
Professional Development and Communication
This coursework rounds out your comprehensive educational experience with business and communication skills necessary to succeed as a professional massage therapist. With faculty guidance, you'll define your goals and target markets for a successful practice. Of course, it goes beyond just lectures and discussions. Two exams, the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam (MBLex) and The National Certification
Exam (NCE) are often required for licensing in various states. Cortiva's Professional
Massage Therapy program prepares students to pass these exams. Cortiva's average
pass rate during the past five years for graduates taking the NCE is over 95%.

The two Diplomas in Massage Therapy available at Cortiva –Hoboken are unique and progressive. Our programs are designed from rich history and collective experience of a national network of professionals advancing the profession of massage.
Diploma in Professional Massage Therapy – 600 hours
This program provides a well rounded educational experience in the art and science of massage therapy. Client centered care is at the heart of the curriculum, which provides a foundation of basic and advanced approaches, including:

The therapeutic massage techniques taught, from the fundamental to advanced, include; Effleurage, Pettrissage, Friction, Vibration, Tapotement, Passive range of motion, and transitioning to create a relaxing wellness massage. Advanced Clinical and Myofascial techniques are also taught and come together in a Clinical Integration course where students practice their skills in the supervised and supported Massage Therapy Center.
This program is designed to meet the educational requirements for certification or licensing in the many states that require National testing and/or 500 to 600 hours of education. Nearby states with current or expected requirements at this level are New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.
Extended Professional Massage Therapy Program – 1080 hours
This program gives students the opportunity to broaden their experience beyond the 600 hours in the Professional Massage Therapy Diploma program. The additional coursework in this program builds upon and introduces advanced classes and topics including;
- The Eastern Approach, a contextualized East Asian perspective introducing the philosophical and experiential groundwork in Asian healing modalities in general, and Zen Shiatsu in particular.
- Neurology, a course focused on the spinal cord, nerves and their communication with the brain.
- Myology and Kinesiology, advanced coursework in joint, muscle, tendon and ligament pathologies.
- Orthopedic Massage Techniques introduces advanced techniques for orthopedic conditions and how to adjust treatments as a clinical therapist.
- Advanced Anatomy, Physiology & Pathology; additional courses to help students relate the body’s structure, systems, and functions to practice of massage. Including a course that introduces nutritional concepts, obesity prevention, and basic physiology of exercise.
- In addition to the courses listed here, there will be additional course time including; Massage Therapy Center, infection control procedures, stone massage, and further work in osteo and neuromuscular pathologies.
This program is designed to meet the educational requirements for certification or licensing in New York, which requires 1000 hours of education. Additionally, this program will prepare the therapist with advanced skills and training giving them a distinguishing advantage as they enter the professional world of massage.
The 600-hour Professional Massage Therapy Program is offered in the following formats:
- 5-month full-time program of two quarter terms - day classes
- 10-month part-time program of four quarter terms - evening classes
All 600 hour program students are given the option to add on the additional terms of advanced studies in order to meet educational requirements for the New York State massage therapy board.
The 1080 – hour Extended Professional Massage Therapy Program is offered in the following formats:
- 10-month, 4-quarter format full-time - day classes
- 17-month, 7-quarter format part-time – evening classes

Added instruction in the elements of designing a career path ensures that the graduating student will be a competent massage therapist, prepared to take the National Certification Exam.

By adding 250 hours to the Professional Massage Therapy Program, the Extended Program will provide students a distinguishing advantage as they enter the professional world. Specialty clinics, case reviews and research applications, elective modalities and advanced bodywork courses complement each other to provide students with creative avenues to refine and enhance the client-centered care skills developed throughout their first 750 hours of education. An additional business course, Career Decisions, further helps students as they build a real-time plan to achieve their professional goals. Graduates of the Extended Massage Therapy Program at Cortiva Institute's Seattle massage school are prepared to work professionally as part of an interdisciplinary team of health and wellness care providers. Faculty actively practicing in the field of massage supervises the additional hands-on experience and clinical practice by mentoring students to develop greater self-confidence they can take with them as they begin their new career as massage therapists.
The Extended Professional Massage Therapy program is comprised of 1000 clock hours and the program can be completed in as little as 10 months. Completion of the Professional Massage Therapy Program is a prerequisite for enrollment in the Extended Professional Massage Therapy Program. The length of the Extended Program comprises the length of the Professional Massage Therapy Program plus one full-time 10-week term.
Upon completion, graduates of either program will be prepared to work as a massage therapist in a variety of environments such as clinics, spas, hospitals, or in their own private practice.
