Massage Therapy and Swimming

Beep, beep, beep. This is the sound of my alarm going off at 5:30am. As I rollover wishing to snooze for the next several hours, I realize I have 10 minutes to get my morning snack and get out the door for practice. It is 23 degrees outside in the middle of January and I have to jump in the water. It’s worth it though. We have exactly four weeks left till the Big East Conference Championships. At this point, we have started our taper so we have decreased the amount of training. Practices consist of about an hour and a half of maintenance or speed work. As my body is starting to recover after a long season of swimming, lifting, and cross training all I can think about is my massage after practice. …read more

It’s Start Day!

Ahh…the sound of students in the halls after quarter break.  It’s easy to spot the new students…..they have brand new Cortiva duffel bags and they’re walking around in wonderment that their first day has actually arrived.  It’s also easy to spot the returning students….they have books and linens in tow, are greeting their classmates like they haven’t seen them in months (it’s only been a week!), and they’re ready to tackle another quarter’s work.   One returning student told me he actually missed school while they had break.

Students aren’t the only folks enjoying Start Day.  Our Student Clinic clients have patiently awaited our return from break and they fill the clinic waiting area, ready for their massage.

All is well in Watertown….Cortiva Boston is back from break and there’s some serious learning and massaging going on.   Life is very good.

How much are you worth in this field? It’s a question many therapists struggle with as they seek employment opportunities or consider starting their own business. It’s easy to be seduced by large dollar values or blow off businesses that seem to pay only a meager price per massage session. When looking at your job opportunities it’s best to evaluate each option using the basic business income statement equation: Revenue (money coming in) minus Expenses (money going out) equals Net Income (what you really earn). …read more

The quarter is winding down and it’s time for some of our students to graduate. It’s always a bittersweet experience for them – they are so happy to be done with their training but also very sad to leave our school. Why we do our jobs -

I handed Buki her Great Award at the APSCU ceremony in DC last night.  She was one of five national award winners out of hundreds of nominees.  When she gave her acceptance speech, she spoke of our school and the wonderful faculty and staff who ‘treat each and every student like royalty’.  She told how she couldn’t have made it without all of us and that we have given her the opportunity to do what she knows she was meant to do – massage people and help them.  …read more

Cortiva – Wall gives back!

WHAT A DAY!

The Cortiva Institute – Wall Massages for Madison event this past Sunday was a great success.  We were almost totally booked!!  It was our hope that we would be able to make $1500 to donate to Madison.  Then we decided to be a little more aggressive and aimed for $1750. When all was said and done, we raised $1952, then a person made a donation to round the amount up to $2000!  Madison’s aunt Jennifer was overwhelmed with our efforts and what we raised.
