Sunday, August 8, 2010 / 9:00am - 5:00pm / 7 CE Contact Hours / $140
This course serves to focus on the pathology, assessment, treatment, and
self-care of the shoulder region with specific focus on the glenohumeral
joint and rotator cuff musculature. Integrating assessment with the application
of various soft tissue treatments will dramatically reduce the severity
of pain and limitation while minimizing the impact this condition may
have upon training, participation, and athletic performance. The therapist
will learn the basic anatomy and function of the glenohumeral joint and
the rotator cuff musculature; and based on this foundation, will better
understand the possible causes and contributing factors associated with
the rotator cuff shoulder dysfunction. Contributing factors such as postural
or structural misalignment, muscle imbalance, trigger points and movement
dysfunction will be identified. The techniques taught in the course include
Myofascial release, Trigger Point Release, Cyriax Cross Fiber Friction
and Muscle Energy Techniques.
Please Bring: A set
of linens and lotion for hands on work.

Saturday, August 28, 2010 / 9:00am - 5:00pm / 7 CE Contact Hours / $140
For clients who are uncomfortable removing their clothes for a massage
treatment, or who cannot get down on the floor to receive a shiatsu or
Thai massage treatment on a futon, Ten Zo is the answer. Ten Zo is a treatment
given to a fully-clothed client on a massage table. It uses Western concepts
such as a knowledge of anatomy and the ability to palpate muscle tension,
and kneading, elbow and forearm techniques from massage therapy. The Eastern
concepts of qi, kyo and jitsu are incorporated along with palming, thumbing
and range of motion techniques for the hips, shoulders and neck from shiatsu.
To elongate muscles, stretches for the arms, legs and back from Thai massage
complete the treatment. Techniques will be shown a few steps at a time
and by the end of the workshop, participants will have incorporated all
of the steps into a full-body treatment.
Please Bring: Due to the nature
of the stretches used, loose-fitting pants (elastic waist or drawstring)
and a loose-fitting top are required. Tank tops, shorts and skirts should
not be worn because of the risk of exposure. Jeans and other types of
pants with zippers should not be worn because they are too constricting
for the stretches. Equipment: a massage table, linens, hand cleaner, small
towel, a pillow case and bolsters.
Instructor: Sandra K. Anderson, BA, NCTMB

Beginning Shiatsu

Saturday - Sunday, September 11 - 12, 2010 / 9:00am - 5:00pm / 14 CE Contact
Hours / $250
Beginning Shiatsu introduces participants to this Japanese type of bodywork
which is based on the same principles as is acupuncture. Participants
learn the theory behind shiatsu including basic traditional Chinese medicine
concepts such as Qi (the body's energy), the streams the Qi flows through
in the body called channels (meridians), and how the disruption of Qi
flow can result in pain, discomfort or other disorders. The goal of shiatsu
is to help rebalance the client's energy and alleviate discomfort. Participants
will learn beginning shiatsu techniques such as palming, pressure applied
with the fingers, thumbs, forearms, elbows, knees and feet, stretches
and range of motion movements, and how these can help rebalance clients'
Qi. Shiatsu is traditionally performed on fully-clothed clients lying
on a futon on the floor, and no lubricants are used. Participants should
note that Beginning Shiatsu will be taught in the traditional manner –
on futons on the floor. These futons will be provided by Cortiva. No techniques
will be shown on massage tables. Being able to easily kneel and move around
on the floor are requirements for this workshop.
Please Bring: Due to the nature
of the stretches used, loose-fitting pants (elastic waist or drawstring)
and a loose-fitting top are required. Tank tops, shorts and skirts should
not be worn because of the risk of exposure. Jeans and other types of
pants with zippers should not be worn because they are too constricting
for the stretches. Since techniques will be performed with the feet, either
clean socks should be worn or participants should have clean feet. Equipment:
one flat sheet, hand cleaner, small towel, note-taking materials.

Deep Tissue Refresher

Sunday, November 7, 2010 / 9:00am - 5:00pm / 7 CE Contact Hours / $140
This course is focused on the skillful application of soft tissue techniques that
allow deeper access to the fascia and muscular layers of the body. This approach
creates a greater sense of relief from chronic muscular tension. Muscular tension
patterns can reduce blood flow and restrict the removal of metabolic wastes, resulting
in pain and loss of function. The typical superficial and passive massage techniques
do not provide the desired relief; this often causes frustration and more reflexive
muscular tension. The practitioner will learn treatment strategies designed to break
these muscular holding patterns that are direct, purposeful, and easy to apply.
The practicing therapist will learn how to use: cross-fiber friction, passive movement,
neurological inhibition, breath and positioning to enhance the overall effectiveness
of treatment.

suffering and pain of everyday life has been known since ancient times. The goal
of The Breathable Body is to help people access that power and use it to make their
lives more nourishing, more comfortable, and more breathable.
The workshop will cover:
- Experiential physiology of how and why the breath works
- Movement education skills to enhance the body’s ability to accommodate breath.

- How to use this new knowledge to benefit you and your client’s everyday life
- Specific breathing tools to be used with your clients that will increase their tissue
