Starts September 18 through December 12, 2010 / Wall / 100 CE Contact Hours Total
/ $1700
Sign up for individual weekends or register for the entire program. NOTE:
Each module may be taken as individual workshops.
Neuromuscular Therapy is an advanced system of soft tissue manipulation,
which specializes in working to alleviate Myofascial pain and pain syndromes.
This course is based on the groundbreaking work of Dr. Janet Travell.
The effectiveness of the technique is based on two conditions: 1) the
therapist's assessment and treatment of muscle, tendon, and periosteal
attachments and 2) addressing and reducing the causal factors contributing
to the chronicity.
During this 100 contact hour Neuromuscular Therapy program, origins, insertions
and actions of muscles to be treated will be revisited. Stressors, perpetuating
factors and trigger point pain referral patterns will be emphasized. Demonstrations
will be shown and application of NMT techniques will be performed. Learn
practical trigger point work, Review muscle anatomy in detail, and receive
plenty of one-on-one time with the instructor.
Supplies needed for the series are: A set of sheets, bolster, towels,
a low drag salve (i.e. Cocoa butter), a notebook and a pen.
Instructor: Kristen Curnan, NCBTMB, is
an alumnus and valedictorian of Cortiva (1998). A member of the Cortiva
faculty, Kristen is also a Certified Neuromuscular Therapist and maintains
a private practice that addresses primarily chronic pain complaints.

Learn the pathology, assessment, treatment, and self-care of the shoulder region
with specific focus on the glenohumeral joint and rotator cuff musculature. Understand
the possible causes and contributing factors associated with rotator cuff shoulder
dysfunction. Contributing factors such as postural or structural misalignment, muscle
imbalance, trigger points and movement dysfunction will be identified. The application
of basic orthopedic assessments, active, passive and resisted ROM, as well as palpation
assessment, serve to help isolate and determine the location and type of dysfunction.
These finding are utilized to form the most effective application of treatment techniques
to reduce painful symptoms, and return the athlete to optimum function. The techniques
taught in the course include Myofascial release, Trigger Point Release, Cyriax Cross
Fiber Friction, and Muscle Energy Techniques.
Please Bring: A set of linens and lotion for hands

In the rapidly expanding field of massage therapy, concerns regarding ethical behavior
and practice are also on the rise. Given the intimate setting of bodywork, it is
crucial to establish a safe environment and a clear understanding between client
and therapist as to what is expected. Therapists must also be able to effectively
communicate within the parameters of each individual's unique personality, including
their own. The intent of this workshop is to define the broad scope of ethics, empower
each therapist with their own personal Code of Ethics, and explore possible ethical
situations which will challenge participants to make good decisions as to how they
respond.
Please Bring: Writing utensil and paper.
Prerequisites: Class is open to all massage therapy students and LMTs.

Deep Tissue Refresher

Saturday, October 30, 2010 / 9:00am - 4:00pm/ Wall /
7 CE Contact Hours / NCBTMB provider # 450214-06 / $140
This course is focused on the skillful application of soft tissue techniques that
allow deeper access to the fascia and muscular layers of the body. This approach
creates a greater sense of relief from chronic muscular tension. Muscular tension
patterns can reduce blood flow and restrict the removal of metabolic wastes, resulting
in pain and loss of function. The typical superficial and passive massage techniques
do not provide the desired relief; this often causes frustration and more reflexive
muscular tension. The practitioner will learn treatment strategies designed to break
these muscular holding patterns that are direct, purposeful, and easy to apply.
The practicing therapist will learn how to use: cross-fiber friction, passive movement,
neurological inhibition, breath and positioning to enhance the overall effectiveness
of treatment.
Please Bring: Set of sheets, unscented oil/cream,
writing utensil. Wear comfortable clothing and supportive footwear.
Prerequisites: This class is open to all health care
practitioners who wish to learn more about the topic.
