Caring for Clients with Cancer

Friday - Sunday, September 10 - 12, 2010 / 9:00am - 6:00pm / 24 CE Contact Hours / NCBTMB Approved / $425 before 8/13/10, $475 thereafter
This intensive three-day course combines the art and science of touch
to create safe, effective massage sessions for clients with cancer, in
cancer treatment and with cancer histories. In a lively, supportive learning
environment, we carefully debunk the long-held contraindication to massage
and discuss current research findings about the benefits of touch for
people with cancer. Participants learn essential cancer intake questions,
proper follow-up on the client's answers, and proven strategies to determine
when and how to involve a client's physician in decision-making. We describe
concrete massage adjustments for surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, bone
metastasis and vital organ involvement. A balanced approach to learning
blends lecture, spirited discussion, and hands-on work with volunteer
clients with cancer. Music, art and literature by people who have had
cancer help expand our understanding of the journey. Massage therapists
from varied backgrounds and massage settings leave with tools that continue
to support them in their work: sample client intake forms, physician information
and permission materials, and summaries of massage research. A balanced
approach to learning includes lecture, hands-on sessions, lively discussion,
use of research literature and a straightforward format that doesn't require
constant note-taking. It includes a comprehensive course manual with many
resources for continued learning. A highlight of this course – hands-on
work with volunteer clients on the last day – offers a chance to practice
skills in a supervised, clinic setting. The goal is to fashion hands-on
sessions that soothe, heal, and reduce pain and isolation. Hands-on practice
is artfully mixed with discussion and lecture. Varying approaches to the
work – meditative, cognitive, kinesthetic, visual, emotional, auditory,
intuitive – are honored throughout this course. A safe learning setting
allows therapists to build lasting knowledge and skills. The 75-page course
manual, client intake forms and materials for the physician assist massage
therapists in their practice, long after the course is over. Tracy makes
it manageable by varying her format, teaching style, classroom setup,
and pacing. Tracy is sensitive to students of all backgrounds and levels,
and encourages questions and discussion. More detailed course information
is available on Tracy's website, www.tracywalton.com.
Instructor: Tracy Walton, MS, LMT –
Tracy consults to hospitals and massage schools, writes and teaches nationally
on massage and cancer. Since 1990 she has worked in private massage therapy
practice, hospital and spa settings. She has researched the role of massage
therapy in metastatic cancer at the Beth Israel-Deaconess Medical Center
and Harvard Medical School's Osher Institute. She taught Physiology and
Pathology for 13 years at the Muscular Therapy Institute in Watertown,
MA, and served as its Academic Dean. In 2003 the AMTA named her the Teacher
of the Year. Tracy holds a Master's degree in biochemistry and cell physiology
and is at work on a textbook, Medical Conditions in Massage Therapy. Her
column, "Cancer and Massage," appears regularly in Massage Today, and
a bibliography of cancer and massage research is on her website, www.tracywalton.com.
Tracy's classrooms are friendly and interactive. She loves integrating
the heart, science and soul of bodywork. Tracy warmly welcomes and reaches
massage therapists from all levels of training.

In the rapidly expanding field of massage therapy, concerns regarding ethical behavior

communicate within the parameters of each individual's unique personality, including
their own. The intent of this workshop is to define the broads cope of ethics, empower
each therapist with their own personal Code of Ethics, and explore possible ethical
situations which will challenge participants to make good decisions as to how they

One short course... long-lasting results for you! Set your anatomy
knowledge free! Thomas Myers' Anatomy Trains® weekend intensives are holistic,
fun and very useful. Completely transform your view of myofascial anatomy
and expand your ability to assess your clients'. The Anatomy Trains concept
moves beyond mechanical "cause and affect" actions of muscles to the integrative
relational connections of real-life functional movement. This is a revolutionary
map for analyzing soft-tissue patterns, and developing strategies for
unwinding these patterns via fascial and myofascial work. Anatomy Trains
offers skills that hands-on therapists, regardless of their modality,
can use to see their clients more clearly and work more effectively. Workshop
Format: The workshop is split into equal time on 1) lecture/presentation,
2) BodyReading™ and postural analysis, and 3) fascial plane and myofascial
plane techniques from Tom's KMI Structural Integration and movement education
library. This course helps you:
- BodyRead your client's postural and movement patterns with greater accuracy
and integration
- Gain access to effective treatment strategies for resolving postural distortions,
which may occur some distance from the site of pain or limitation
- Enable you to make distinct changes in your clients' structure in a few
short moves
Course Objectives:
- Understand basic properties and connected nature of fascia, and tensegrity
applied to fascia and human movement
- A succinct and relevant introduction to geometry/character of the connective
tissue, and the topology of fascial planes
- Be able to identify and trace the 6 major and 6 supplemental fascial meridians
along which movement, tension, and postural distortion travel
- Be able to BodyRead™ postural patterns based on analysis of Anatomy Trains
lines
- Apply knowledge to construct a bodywork session appropriate for the specific
pattern of each client
- This course also serves as a prerequisite for entry in the KMI 500-hour

- Participants will exchange and practice, on one another, BodyReading (visual
assessment) under supervised analysis of instructor and assistants while
learning manual therapy techniques
Prerequisites: Movement Therapists: Anatomy
Trains workshops are frequently modified for particular audiences, such
as yoga or Pilates, and these variations would emphasize the movement
implications of these continuities rather than hands-on technique. Please

Thai Yoga Bodywork

Thai yoga bodywork is a fusion of traditional Thai massage principles and yoga.
It is a gentle form of bodywork that creates a lengthening and broadening experience
on a fully dressed client on a mat on the floor. It combines stretches and yogic
postures with compressions and release work on every major muscle group using an
ingenious system of movements that allows the therapist to manipulate the client
with minimal effort using weight and leverage. At the end of a treatment, both the
client and the therapist will feel relaxed and energized. Learn a complete, full-body
Thai yoga bodywork routine using the tools of the body: feet, hands, forearms and
knees. In addition to traditional Thai techniques, you will learn how to use other
tools and props for leverage that will give you a fresh perspective on body mechanics.
Instructor: Jonathan Vogel, LMP – Jonathan
has been teaching bodywork for over 20 years. Twelve years as a professional dancer
provided Jonathan with a unique perspective on body mechanics and movement. More
than two decades of teaching for the Brian Utting School of Massage have seasoned
this instructor of kinesiology, anatomy and Thai massage. A BS in Zoology and Chemistry
gave Jonathan a wide base of knowledge that helps to make his classroom interactive
and playful. Jonathan finds use in all tools of massage, choosing most often a combination
of body leverage and his feet or knees as well as hands to apply pressure in bodywork
sessions. He loves the combination of heated stone, deep work and the use of bars
in the ceiling to hang from (i.e., Ashiatsu style) as well as a bodywork style known
as Breema, which combines breathing with presence and ease.

our clients are looking for relief from their stresses, and we are trying to manage
our own stresses as well. But what is this thing we call stress? And since it's
not going away, how do we effectively work with it? In this class we will explore
the anatomy and physiology of the Autonomic Nervous System and the Endocrine System,
how they up-regulate in times of stress, and why. The resulting stress disorders
from autonomic/neuroendocrine imbalance are rampant in our culture. We will investigate
these disorders, and how stress, massage, and other external (and internal) factors
influence health and balance.
