Deep Tissue Refresher
Register Now
June 8, 2008 / 9:00am - 5:00pm / 7 CE Hours / $140

Focused on the skillful application of soft tissue techniques that allow deeper access to the fascia and muscular layers of the body. This approach creates a greater sense of relief from chronic muscular tension. Muscular tension patterns can reduce blood flow and restrict the removal of metabolic wastes, resulting in pain and loss of function. The typical superficial and passive massage techniques do not provide the desired relief; this often causes frustration and more reflexive muscular tension. The practitioner will learn treatment strategies designed to break these muscular holding patterns that are direct, purposeful, and easy to apply. The practicing therapist will learn how to use: cross-fiber friction, passive movement, neurological inhibition, breath and positioning to enhance the overall effectiveness of treatment.

Instructor: Tom Karis - Tomhas worked in the massage therapy profession, both as a practicing therapist and as an instructor since 1996. He applies a unique blend of myofascial release, trigger point therapy, orthopedic massage and myoskeletal alignment techniques in his own work with clients. In addition to developing and teaching the massage therapy curriculum, he has developed a 100-hour NCBTMB approved CE course in structural bodywork.

Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ) is an ancient Japanese healing art that balances the body's energies and facilitates its own profound healing capacity. This introductory class will teach you simple yet powerful self-help techniques to balance your energy and release tension and stress. When one or more of these pathways become blocked, the circulation of life energy is comprised and health issues and/or pain occur. Holding these safety energy locks in particular sequences can bring balance to body, mind and spirit which enhances overall well-being and vitality and often releases the causes of both acute and chronic conditions. Participants will learn how to balance their energy to increase their vitality and well-being and also will be able to help others using this art. Discussion and questions are welcome. No experience is necessary.

Instructor: Nancy Conkling - For 15 years, Nancy Conkling has had a practice in Acton (and now also Belmont) where she offers private sessions for adults and children and teaches self-help classes. Register Now
November 2, 2008 / 9:00am - 6:00pm /8 CE Hours / $160

Whether you are a beginner or experienced massage therapist, chair massage can be physically taxing to the thumbs, hands, and wrists. The techniques in this class mix elements of Thai Massage, Myofascial Release and Deep Tissue forearm and elbow. The moves feel deep and are easier on the therapist's body - some even provide a stretch for the therapist! The course reviews proper alignment and will modify the stances to accommodate these complementary techniques. Focus will be on the upper back, shoulders, neck, arms, low back, hips and legs. Come prepared to move! Your own massage chair is required.
