The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) urges professional massage therapists to take care of themselves first this flu season so they can better help their clients. The AMTA, an organization representing more than 58,000 massage therapists, says winter can be a particularly challenging time for massage therapists who come into direct contact with so many clients during seasonal flu and H1N1.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website has information on how to protect yourself during flu season. The AMTA suggests professional massage therapists check out the recommendations as well as follow commonsense guidelines such as washing hands frequently and not accepting appointments with clients that have flu-like symptoms. Always clean your massage table or chair after each client and most of all, if you’re not feeling well yourself, better to cancel your appointments.
