Working with a client who has never had a massage before? Since this will be your client’s first impression of the massage therapy experience, it’s important to take your time to make him or her feel comfortable, relaxed and able to fully benefit from the experience.
Take a few minutes to introduce yourself and find out what your client is seeking. If you know in advance that this is your client’s first massage, you can explain what will happen during the massage and encourage questions or concerns.
One of the most obvious questions first-time massage clients may ask is “Do I have to be naked?” As a professional massage therapist, you most likely will answer “No, you just need to be comfortable so that you can benefit fully from the massage.” Other questions you might be asked include, “Can I talk during massage,” “What kinds of oils do you use?” “Will it hurt? Or even ‘What do I do during a massage?”
Just a few minutes answering basic questions like these will pay off in leaps and bounds by helping your clients get the most out of their massages and help ensure that they will be back to see you again in the future.
