Venturing Outdoors is Key Ingredient to Overall Good Health

According to some published studies, most of us spend some 90% of our time indoors, even though we know that lack of sunlight and fresh air can lead to depression, listlessness and sometimes even seasonal affect disorder. No matter where you live, there are ways to get outdoors in the fresh air and sunlight and reap those benefits for your health. A simple walk through a park, to work, or to school with your kids can produce a positive impact on your health.

Studies show that spending time in nature helps people relax, improves memory and attention span. Being outdoors and attuned to your surroundings, whether it’s a city street, a country road or a quiet beach is, according to a recent study by the University of Michigan, an involuntary brain activity that makes our brains work differently, in a relaxed state, which pays off later.

Being outdoors, eating well and getting enough exercise are all key components to the continuum of good health, as can be professional massage therapy, which has been demonstrated to help relax, heal and rejuvenate the mind and body.

So as the weather turns a little colder in most parts of the country, we’d encourage you to venture outdoors as often as possible. If you work a 9 to 5 job, make sure to get out at lunch and take a walk with a colleague. If you have young children at home, take a picnic lunch to the park. If you’re a student, bike to a class or plan a weekend hike with friends.

Your psyche will thank you and you may even get a better grade on your next exam. That’s been demonstrated too.
